The summer fete committee of a typical British village meets on a cold January night to discuss the arrangements for that year’s fête.  As committee protocol gives way to bickering and gossip, we begin to see the personalities of those present - Ethel, who knows everything about everybody; Pauline, the vicar’s long-suffering wife; Gloria, exhausted by caring for her elderly mother; horsey Marjorie who is very attentive to the new shy teacher, Angela; elderly Mavis who chooses when to observe and when to play senile and Sally, the brisk Army wife.  Much innuendo abounds around the vicar whose faith is in question and who enjoys more than his share of the communion wine.  Thus the tip of the iceberg is presented, but it is in Act ll, during and after the fête, that the secrets and hidden agendas of ‘ordinary’ people unravel.  Much has happened to everyone in the six months further on, not all of it predictable.  The cathartic events of the fête are related with humour and pathos, and the upbeat ending affirms the enduring value of village life.
