For King & Country

A fabulous vintage afternoon/evening to commemorate the centenary of the First World War – For King and Country is TODS’ 2018 autumn variety show consisting of a collection of wartime songs, anecdotes, poems, facts, and play excerpts from and about the wartime era, uniquely put together by TODS. Indulge in a decadent vintage afternoon tea of cakes and sandwiches alongside the matinee, or a classic British dinner of bangers and mash alongside the evening performance. Think floral bunting, vintage teacups and delectable homemade food!
Much has been written and continues to written about the war but increasingly the views taken are those with today’s perspective. Inevitable perhaps but I felt that in tribute to the men that served it would be disrespectful to their memory if we didn’t try to see it from their point of view, rather than ours. A difficult task as the world has changed so much since then but I felt the attempt should at least be made.
In the time available, nothing like the whole story could be told but also the performance was meant as entertainment, not a history lesson so the really grim aspects of trench warfare were only hinted at but not entirely ignored. The idea was to cover many aspects of the conflict, from the trenches to British society as a whole, to commemorate Britain’s part in the most destructive war seen up to that date.Peter Huxley, Director & Playwrite
