Bed by Jim Cartwright
Autumn 2019
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR
Rehearsals are now underway for what promises to be a unique and beautiful little show. Regardless of Halloween and Brexit, you won’t want to miss ‘Bed’ at the Town Hall from 31st Oct to 2nd Nov.
‘Bed’ is a surreal exploration of life and dreams – of old age and death. Seven elderly people are trying to get to sleep, but constantly being kept awake by their memories. This wonderful piece of theatre is greatly challenging for the actors, using strange words and phrases and some long poetic speeches.
Jim Cartwright’s award-winning play was a brilliant success at The Royal National Theatre, and director David Waters’ previous production of ‘Bed’ came second in the All-England Festival.
The production will be visually striking and punctuated by some great music – a mix of haunting Enya classics and some late 1950’s Doo–Wop. The stage will be managed by Sally Klemen and Beverley Mulrooney.
The cast is a mix of TODS stalwarts and some very welcome newcomers :
Geoff Down, Jane Barton, Geoff Dale, Jo Dale, Ian Klemen, Tina Gallagher and Stephen Page.
Supporting the play there will be our mini-musical ‘Sweet Dreams’. This a set of songs all about dreams, we’re planning songs by Elbow, Imagine Dragons, Caro Emerald – as well as some musical theatre showstoppers.
